Comprehensive Behavioral Interventions for Tics

Are you looking for an evidenced based, research backed way to manage your (or your child’s) tics?

The American Academy of Neurology recommends Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) as a first-line treatment for Tourette and tic disorders. CBIT has been proven to help people manage tics, and a 2010 randomized controlled trial indicated that people who had participated in CBIT continued to benefit even 6 months following treatment (Piacentini et al. JAMA. 2010.)

How does this Gold Standard program work and what does it look like?

  • We complete an assessment of current tics and the degree of impact on daily living, socialization, work, school and quality of life. What matters to you?

  • We dive in deep to to daily life, sensory impacts, and stressors that could be inadvertently triggering tics.

  • Relaxation training in the form of easy-to-implement and effective strategies based on your needs, habits, and sensory preferences are provided. This is where we introduce biofeedback- a high-tech way to help you get the best results!

  • Using habit reversal methods, we target the tics that are most impactful first, helping to improve your confidence and ability to manage tics causing distress, pain or embarrassment. You’ll see progress within a few sessions!

  • This is the secret sauce to making your future bright. We coach you how to maintain your tic management progress and how to address future tics. You can feel confident managing symptoms and tics whenever they arise.

  • Total time length of the program is usually 8 consecutive weeks with a few more sessions up to three months later to ensure you maintain your progress- even after therapy is over!
